SYNOPSIS:
The Doctor and Romana find themselves on a new alien world, about the 2,736th one in a row at this point. But there's something strikingly odd about this one. Could be the barren wasteland, the mole-like inhabitants, or the gigantic, city sized, underground burrowers running away from something... something immensely terrifying. Never stopping, never faltering, never satisfied. The Silex are coming... and they are hungry...
WRITING:
Jonathan Morris' name graces the written by section for this story, and it is an absolute corker, being a mix of the utter maddness of Season 18, a small hint of the non-robot part of Robots of Death, and topping of with a blended mashup of Cyber-Wombles thrown in for good measure. This is a script which showcases the true extent of how an audio drama can be limitless.
CAST:
As always Tom and Lalla are divine reprising their most famous roles, but joining them are some brilliant performers in the form of Matthew Cottle and Abigail McKern as the subterranean Bells, not to mention the excellent talent of returning greats Robbie Stevens, John Banks and future companion Jane Slavin. Under the watchful eye of director Nicholas Ruddy Briggs, the cast are nothing short of brilliant.
SOUND WORK:
Jamie Robertson returns for another magnum opus as the music and sound design of this story is pinpoint perfect. Delivering a brilliant and tense score, along with some "groundbreaking" sound work, he proves once again why he is on Big Finish's payroll.
CONCLUSION:
Two thirds of the way though this years series of Fourth Doctor Adventures, and there are certainly no signs of stopping or faltering. Morris and Briggs have delivered a brilliant, and immensely original, sci-fi romp that packs a punch in more way than one.
VERDICT: 9/10 You won't have to dig far for brilliance with this one. ;D
